Bit disappointingHaving selected this restaurant based upon previous reviews we were somewhat disappointed, particularly with the quality of food. Beef steaks were extremely tough and service was sluggish. On a more positive note, The traditional pork and clams dish was tasty as were all the desserts. However, the wonderfully traditional decor and resulting atmosphere were unfortunately not matched by the quality of the food.
Top notch authentic Portuguese cuisineMy wife and I went here on the final night of our Spain/Portugal vacation before flying back to Canada. After eating lots of Italian, French, Indian etc., we were dying for some authentic Portuguese cuisine and found it here. It is a small restaurant that is clearly family owned and operated, with a huge wine selection (and yes the list is hand written as someone else posted). We had "soup from the north" (vegetable soup) and the spare ribs, which came in a traditional portuguese cooking dish called a cataplana... Absolutely top notch, full of flavor, and a generous portion (spare ribs stew for one could likely feed 1.5 - 2, only costs 10 euros). Interior is a little dated but that only adds to the ambience. Would recommend this and would come back in a heartbeat.
Surprisingly goodMy wife and I visited this restaurant purely by chance when the place we were heading for turned out to be booked for a private party. It was a remarkably good meal and had a wonderfully ancient feel about it from the massive, hand-written wine list to the hessian on the wall. I had pork alentejo (pork and clams) while my wife had peppered steak. Both were extremely tasty.
The oddest thing was the selection of vegetables added to the meal. There was everything from slices of apples to broccoli to lettuce.
Service was low key but friendly. As seems to be the case with Lisbon restaurants, the food is cooked and prepared to order so it wasn't that quick but there was no unwarranted delay.
Would happily go back.
