Best Dining experienceI have a feeling the bad reviews are spoiled American tourists. We went two nights. the second night we asked for grilled sardines which were not on the menu. then we told the owner to feed us what he wanted. He brought us olives,Iberian ham, cheeses, green wine, wonderful sardines, plates of salad and vegetables and creme brulee and caffe. We finished the evening with many glasses of 10 year old tawny port. We went early which people in Portugal don't do and even after a two hour meal, the place was just starting to fill up. Service takes a while because nothing is cooked until you order it. If you are used to American chain restaurants, you will hate this place. This is an authentic experience.
Authentic home cookingWalking down the Avenida da Liberdade on our first evening in Lisbon, we were convinced by a young man to try "his" restaurant. The location is not were you would normally go as a tourist, as services on a more personal level were offered just across the street. But we were kindly greeted by the owner himself. Although the menu was also in English it was no tourist trap. The waiter carefully explained all the local dishes we asked about, before we chose a selection of fish steam cooked in a brass boiler together with a mix of vegetables and spices. Although it was not fine cuisine, it was good food. The wine selection is impressive and we let the owner guide us to a choice that we were happy with. Again, no attempt to rip off tourists. A platter with a selction of sweets and fruit went down well with a nice glass of port. We got 3 ports to taste before choosing one. A good cup of coffee rounded up everything nicely for our tab of 94 EUR for two.
